Collision Between Truck And Bus Claims 20 Lives In South Africa’s Limpopo Province

A tragic accident occurred when a truck collided head-on with a bus transporting mine workers in the Limpopo province of northern South Africa, resulting in the loss of 20 lives.

Murray & Roberts Cementation, a construction firm, stated on X, formerly Twitter, “We are deeply saddened by the devastating accident that occurred yesterday, Sunday, 17th September, around 16:00 when a bus transporting Murray & Roberts Cementation employees to the Venetia mine tragically involved in a head-on collision.”

The statement also mentioned that four employees were hurt and are currently undergoing medical treatment.

The firm offered its heartfelt condolences and empathy to the families, friends, and coworkers of the individuals who lost their lives.

The Limpopo transportation department reported that there were 20 fatalities confirmed at the site, with additional two individuals passing away at the hospital.

The transport agency reported that a collision occurred between the vehicles on a significant roadway connecting Musina town and Venetia mine in the northern region of Limpopo province.

According to Al Jazeera’s report, Provincial Transport Minister Florence Radzilani, who inspected the accident site on Monday, stated that certain truck drivers steer clear of routes monitored by traffic authorities due to either their vehicles not meeting roadworthy standards or their drivers lacking valid permits.

She said, “We always talk to our law enforcement officers and send out messages to these drivers to say they must make sure the vehicle is roadworthy, so that you don’t put the lives of innocent people at risk.

“We are waiting on investigators, but there are already allegations about the truck driver not having a license and the truck not being roadworthy.”
