Charly Boy: I’m An Activist Because I Don’t Want Men To Go Through What I Went Through

Popular political activist and wellness advocate, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly boy, has said that he is an activist because he doesn’t want men to go through what he went through.

He said this during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Friday night while speaking on the Charly Boy foundation that advocates for mens’ mental and physical health.

The Singer and song writer highlighted that his activist is motivated by personal struggles which he now seeks to protect men from, Charly Boy said, “I am an activist because I don’t want men to go through what I went through.”

Reflecting on his own journey, he spoke candidly about the profound impact his personal health challenges had on him. “For what I’ve been through, I would rather not a lot of men go through that,” he added, highlighting the pivotal role his experiences played in shaping his advocacy.

Charly Boy stressed the importance of openness and trust when addressing health issues. “I encourage a lot of men to be more open and trusting about their mental and physical health issues,” he explained.

He criticised societal expectations that often pressure men to conceal their emotions, asserting that such attitudes contribute to larger health problems. “We have this thing ‘men don’t cry’, they are supposed to hide their emotions. I don’t believe in that,” he declared.

Drawing from his interactions with men seeking support, Charly Boy highlighted the emotional toll many men face silently. “I’ve met strangers who have opened up to me, who tell me a lot of intimate things,” he shared. He expressed concern that many men do not have anyone to confide in, not even their spouses. “That’s kind of sad,” he lamented, underlining the need for more open dialogue in relationships.

Discussing the Charly Boy Foundation, he outlined its mission after his personal medical challenges and friend’s motivation and promotion. “After my medical challenge, one of my friends prompted me in that direction,” he explained.

The foundation aims to create awareness and provide support to men navigating health issues. “We’re partnering with hospitals and doctors to raise funds for initial testing,” he elaborated, highlighting their commitment to alleviating financial barriers to healthcare.

Charly Boy expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, particularly in its youth. “The salvation of this country lies in the hands of its exceptional young people,” he proclaimed. He credited his hope to encounters with young Nigerians making positive impacts, emphasising their potential to drive meaningful change.

Reflecting on his 47-year marriage, Charly Boy pointed out the importance of friendship and openness in relationships. “Your partner should be your best friend,” he advised, stressing the value of sincere communication and mutual support. He shared personal insights from his marriage, where friendship formed a solid foundation for trust and respect.

His commitment to openness, trust, and community support remains unwavering. “Our goal is to direct support where it’s needed most,” he outlined ongoing efforts to empower men to prioritise their health.
