The individuals previously referred to as the Central Park Five, who were exonerated on Monday, have initiated a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate.
As election day approaches in two weeks, the group alleged that the former president made “false and defamatory statements” about them during his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris last month. They are seeking a jury trial to assess both compensatory and punitive damages.
The group wrote in a federal complaint, “Defendant Trump falsely stated that plaintiffs killed an individual and pled guilty to the crime. These statements are demonstrably false.”
The men are upset because Trump essentially “defamed them in front of 67 million people, which has caused them to seek to clear their names all over again,” co-lead counsel Shanin Specter told The Associated Press in an email.
