Burna Boy’s ‘Ye’ Gets Gold Certification in the US

Three years after its release, Burna Boy’s hit single ‘Ye’ has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the fastest Nigerian song to achieve this feat.

The self-styled African Giant posted the milestone on Twitter, along with the caption, “Still Striving.” His mother and manager, Bose Ogulu also confirmed the achievement on her Instagram page.

‘Ye’ joins the growing list of Nigerian records to be Gold certified in the US in recent weeks. ‘If’, and ‘Fall’ by Davido as well as ‘Come Closer’ by Wizkid have all achieved gold status stateside.

The RIAA awards certification is based on the number of albums and singles sold through retail and other ancillary markets. A Gold record is a single or album that sells 500,000 units (records, tapes, or compact discs).

‘Ye’ was released on August 6, 2018, as the sixth single from his third studio album ‘Outside.’ It peaked at number 26 and 31 on Billboard’s Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and R&B/Hip-hop Airplay charts, respectively.

The song, a mid-tempo hit with a catch chorus, earned around 11 million streams over seven months across major US streaming platforms after its release. The official music video, which Burna says “essentially shows the unrelenting nature of Nigerians” currently sits at 137 million views on YouTube, making it one of his highest streamed songs on the platform.
