The nominations for the Headies, Nigeria’s premier music award show, have been released, with Wizkid, Davido, Fireboy DML and Burna Boy gaining the most nods.
Wizkid earned nominations for Best Recording of the Year and Best Pop Single for his hits, ‘Smile’ and ‘Joro’ respectively. Joro, his 2019 hit, was also nominated for Song of the Year.
In the Album of the Year Category, Burna Boy’s 2019 ‘African Giant’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Apollo’ will compete against Adekunle Gold’s Afro Pop Vol.1, Brymo’s Yellow and Chike’s ‘Boo of the Booless.’
Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Mayorkun, and Tiwa Savage are nominated in the ‘Artist of the Year’ category.
Song of the Year will boast Davido’s ‘Fem,’ Simi’s ‘Duduke,’ ‘Mafo’ by Naira Marley and ‘Nobody’ by DJ Neptune.
Tiwa Savage, Nigeria’s self-styled Queen of Afrobeats, received three nominations. Along with her Artist of the Year nod, her album ‘Celia’ is up in the Best R&B album category while ‘Dangerous Love is nominated in the Best R&B Single category.
The much anticipated Next Rated category includes Tems, Omah Lay, Oxlade, and Bella Shmurda.
The Headies are aimed at rewarding excellence in the Nigerian music and creative industry. The 14th edition of the award show reviews songs from July 2019 to September 2020.
