Burkina Faso Junta Says It Thwarted Coup Attempt

The military government of Burkina Faso reported that the country’s security and intelligence agencies successfully thwarted a coup plot on Tuesday.

In the official statement, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, the spokesperson for the junta, conveyed the following message, “Officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilization have been arrested and others are actively sought.

“Investigations will help unmask the instigators of this plot.”

It claimed that the individuals accused harbored malevolent motives to target the Republic’s institutions with the aim of pushing the nation into turmoil.

The present junta took over by overthrowing the military leadership of Lt. Col. Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba, approximately eight months after it orchestrated a coup to depose the democratically elected President Roch Marc Kaboré.

On September 30, 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the leader of the junta, assumed control, marking the second coup in just eight months for the nation.

Burkina Faso is among the increasing number of West African nations where the military has assumed control, alleging that the elected administrations have not upheld their commitments. In September 2022.
