Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration’s swift action at scrapping the rogue Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) was misconstrued as a sign of weakness by unpatriotic citizens.
Buhari stated this in a nationwide broadcast following widespread violence in major cities across the country, and comes two days after officers of the Nigerian military shot at unarmed #EndSARS demonstrators.
“I must warn those who have hijacked and misdirected the initial, genuine and well – intended protest of some of our youths in parts of the country, against the excesses of some members of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
“Sadly, the promptness with which we have acted seemed to have been misconstrued as a sign of weakness and twisted by some for their selfish unpatriotic interests,” the president said.
However, the Nigerian leader was silent on Tuesdays attack where uniformed officers opened fire on peaceful protesters killing some with others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
