The National Council of States (NCS) is expected to meet at the State House, Abuja on Friday with President Muhammadu Buhari presiding.
With the President as Chairman, Vice President as deputy chairman, the membership of the council include living former Nigerian Presidents and Heads of State, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all the Governors of the 36 states of the Federation, and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.
The NCS at its first meeting in 2023, is billed to deliberate on the upcoming general elections, which will commence with the presidential poll on February 25.
The President at the meeting will also present his proposal for an award of the national honor of Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) to the Executive Vice Chairman of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof. Mohammed Haruna.
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had on Wednesday hinted that he would be briefing the Council, categorically stating the meeting had been scheduled for Friday.
Yakubu, after briefing the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during its weekly meeting had told newsmen that “the briefing for the Council of State is going to take place on Friday the 10th. So basically, it’s about the readiness of the Commission to conduct the elections”.
