Bridge Collapse Traps Thousands in Adamawa, State Electoral Commission Chairman Calls for Federal Assistance

The chairman of the Adamawa state Independence Electoral Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Umar and thousands of others trapped near Savannah Sugar , Dangote’s  Sugar factory following a  bridge collapse at Lamurde Local Government Area in the state

The Chairman spoke to Thisday via phone on Monday morning, that they were trapped in Lamurde since Sunday night because a bridge linking  Adamawa and Gombe states has collapsed 

He said the incident has ensued traffic jam in the areas as thousands of motorists and heavy-duty vehicles are trapped on the highway presently seeking for rescue

Mohammed called on the Federal Government and other agencies to come to their rescue, adding that because of the incessant heavy down  pour areas  were over flooded and it is difficult to navigate through the bush or the river of the collapse bridge.

“We were coming from Jigawa state via Gombe state with my team, where we went for training but on reaching close home, we were trapped because a bridge linking the state capital and Gombe state collapsed” he said.

Also, a resident in the area of the collapsed bridge, Mr Abel Mathew said the bridge collapse as results of the recent flood due to incessant heavy down pour  these few days.

He said the locals are also putting heads together to temporarily salvage the situation before the arrival of authorities concerned to handle the situation permanently.

Responding on the issue, Engr. Dimas Tuwai  the Acting Federal Controller of Works in charge of the state said he has mobilized his men to site and before the end of the day an alternative passage will be provided for thousands trapped.

He said , it was a small bridge under construction where the contractors provided a diversion, adding that it was the diversion that was over flooded because of continues heavy rainfall these days.

The controller said commuters should bear with the disaster because his men were already in charge of the situation and  there is no cause for alarm.

He also urged travellers to before careful when driving along that road because construction is ongoing on that road.
