Bridge Collapse In Brazil Kills One, Spills Sulfuric Acid Into River

A Brazilian bridge collapse has killed one person and spilled sulfuric acid into the Tocantins River

A tragic incident unfolded in Brazil on Sunday as a bridge connecting the northern and northeastern regions collapsed, resulting in at least one death and the spillage of sulfuric acid into the Tocantins River. The collapse occurred as vehicles were crossing the 533-meter-long bridge that links the cities of Estreito in Maranhão state and Aguiarnópolis in Tocantins state.

According to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure, the central span of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge gave way in the afternoon, plunging a tanker truck carrying sulfuric acid into the river. Preliminary reports from the fire department confirmed one fatality, while another person was rescued alive.

Aguiarnopolis city councilman Elias Junior was recording a video asking authorities to fix problems with the bridge, which he said could no longer handle the heavy trucks passing over it. As he pointed to a large crack on the shoulder of the bridge, the structure collapsed in front of him, causing him to run back. Junior did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Preliminary investigations suggest at least 11 individuals were involved in the accident. Two trucks, a car, and a motorcycle plunged into the river, which has a depth exceeding 50 meters. Rescue divers temporarily halted operations after discovering a submerged tanker leaking sulfuric acid into the water, raising concerns over environmental contamination.

The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, inaugurated in 1960, was constructed using reinforced concrete and forms part of the BR-226 highway. This key route connects Brazil’s federal capital, Brasília, to the northern city of Belém, which is set to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference next year.

The incident has spotlighted Brazil’s aging infrastructure and the risks posed by delays in maintenance. Elias Junior, who has been vocal about the deteriorating condition of the bridge, has not yet commented on the collapse. A video reportedly capturing the moment the bridge fell has yet to be independently verified.

Authorities are now focused on assessing the environmental impact of the sulfuric acid spill, which could have long-term consequences for the Tocantins River ecosystem. The incident also raises pressing questions about the safety of bridges and other critical infrastructure in Brazil.

As investigations continue, the tragedy underscores the urgent need for proactive maintenance to prevent future disasters.
