Bode George: I Did Not Vote For Atiku Because My People Were Not Represented in PDP Leadership

Chief Bode George has explained his reasons for not campaigning or voting for the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, citing he did do due to underrepresentation of his people in the party.

On Tuesday, Chief Bode George told ARISE News that while other zones in the country were represented in PDP’s leadership for the 2023 election, his zone was not represented, which is why he did not support Atiku in the Presidential Elections, and so, he did not commit any anti-party activities.

He said he could not in good faith, encourage the people from his zone to vote for the candidate of a party who did not see them as people who could be top members of the party. 

He said “I told them before that if they do not rearrange the top echelon of the management of the party, I will not vote for Atiku, because you know what happened? …Where is my zone? If you don’t consider my people as that important to be part of the top echelon of your management… How do I campaign for you?

“If you don’t respect my people in politics, what am I doing there?”

When asked why he did not support the PDP’s governorship candidate, the former deputy national chairman claimed that he did not commit any anti-party activities, saying that it was not a party matter, but they picked the person that they believed to be the best candidate to support. 

He said, “All the normal tenets, routes, expectations from the candidate of the party were not handled properly by this young man (Olajide Adediran). We spoke to him, he headed in the direction that he wanted.”

Concerning the suspension of some of the members of the PDP by the National Working Committee due to anti-party activities, he stated that only the National Executive Committee was allowed to suspend fellow members of NEC. 

Bode George said that the party handled the issue wrongly, and that those in power should not have been suspended. He however said that while their suspension should not have taken place, it was a consequence of the actions that they had taken. 

Speaking on the state of the party, he said, “The best solution now to save this sinking ship is to mediate. It is after the post mortem analysis that we will now take action.”
