Boat Carrying 45 Refugees Capsizes Off Yemen’s Coast, Leaving Four Survivors

EXCERPT: A boat carrying 45 refugees capsized off Yemen’s coast, leaving only four survivors, with dozens missing.

A boat carrying at least 45 refugees capsized off Yemen’s Taiz coast on Wednesday night, leaving only four survivors, the U.N. refugee agency in Yemen reported on Thursday. The incident was caused by strong winds and overloading.

The agency is collaborating with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to assist and protect the survivors. Further details about the other refugees have not been provided.

In June, a similar tragedy occurred when a boat carrying 260 migrants from Somalia capsized off the Yemeni coast, resulting in at least 49 deaths and 140 missing persons.

Since 2014, IOM has recorded 1,860 migrant deaths and disappearances along the route from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to Gulf countries. Last year, 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa, according to the United Nations.
