Birmingham City Sack Wayne Rooney As Manager After Just 15 Games In Charge

Wayne Rooney, the manager of Birmingham City, has been fired after just 83 days in charge of the Championship team.

The 38-year-old’s appointment was announced on October 11th, following the contentious decision to fire John Eustace when the Blues were sixth on the table.

Since then, Blues have dropped to 20th place, with their 3-0 loss to Leeds on Monday being their ninth loss in 15 games.

Rooney said, “Football is a results business and I recognise they’ve not been at the level I wanted them to be.”

The Blues have also fired Rooney’s backroom staff- Carl Robinson, a former Wales and Wolves player, and have appointed Professional development coach Steve Spooner as their temporary manager.

Rooney, however, said that he did not believe that the 13 weeks he spent coaching the club was enough for him to bring about the change that it needed, after which he declared that he will now be taking a vacation from the game.

He said, “I would like to thank (co-owners) Tom Wagner and Tom Brady and (chief executive) Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club.

“However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed.

“Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback.

“I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager.”
