Biden, Tinubu Meet in India, Reinforce Commitment To US-Nigeria Relationship

United States President Joe Biden on Sunday met formally with his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Tinubu, in New Delhi, the Indian capital. 

The meeting was on the sidelines of the G-20 Leaders Summit which began Saturday and ended on Sunday in New Delhi. 

During the meeting between the two leaders, Biden hailed Tinubu for the economic steps taken so far to revive Nigeria’s economy since he became President on May 29, 2023.

The US President also applauded the role of Tinubu as ECOWAS Chairman towards restoring democratic rule and rule of law in Niger Republic and beyond.

The US states government in a release via www.whitehouse.gov stated, inter alia:

“President Joe Biden met with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu today on the sidelines of the G20 in New Delhi, India to reinforce our enduring commitment to the U.S.-Nigeria relationship and to the longstanding friendship between our two countries and peoples. 

“President Biden welcomed the Tinubu Administration’s steps to reform Nigeria’s economy and thanked President Tinubu for his strong leadership as the chair of the Economic Community of West African States to defend and preserve democracy and the rule of law in Niger and the broader region. 

“Nigeria’s invitation to the G20 Summit is a recognition of Nigeria’s important global role as Africa’s largest democracy and economy.”
