Biden Faces New Pressure from Top Democrats Over Candidacy

US President Biden, facing Covid-19 and growing Democratic dissent, has again defended his re-election bid amid calls for his withdrawal.

President Joe Biden is facing new questions over his candidacy in the November election, with his campaign events on pause due to a Covid-19 infection. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have reportedly met with Biden to express concerns about his bid for the White House. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also privately told him he cannot beat Donald Trump in November’s election, according to CNN.

Announcing his Covid infection on Wednesday, Biden’s press secretary said the 81-year-old was experiencing mild symptoms. He will isolate at his home in Delaware while continuing to perform his duties, said Karine Jean-Pierre. Biden, who is vaccinated and boosted, has tested positive for Covid twice before.

Earlier in the day, Biden visited supporters in Las Vegas and spoke at an event, but had to cancel a speech later at UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organization. His trip, intended to revive his appeal among Hispanic voters, was cut short.

Biden has faced growing calls to withdraw from the election race, with top Democrats expressing concerns about his impact on their chances in Congress. During private meetings, Schumer and Jeffries conveyed worries that Biden’s presence on the ticket could harm their efforts. Pelosi has reportedly expressed similar concerns.

Despite this, Biden remains determined to stay in the race. White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Biden told both leaders he plans to win and looks forward to working with them. Pelosi’s office and Schumer’s office both downplayed the reports but confirmed discussions took place.

Around two dozen Democratic politicians, including Congressman Adam Schiff, have publicly called for Biden to step aside. Schiff praised Biden’s presidency but suggested it might be time for another Democrat to lead.

Before the Covid announcement, Biden appeared energetic during a speech but was later seen moving slowly and cautiously. He posted on social media thanking supporters and vowing to continue his work while in recovery.
