US President Joe Biden has officially designated January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, becoming the first former US president to reach a centenary.
Following his death, Biden hailed Carter as a remarkable leader, statesman, and humanitarian, noting his tireless efforts to combat disease, promote peace, advance civil rights and human rights, support fair elections, provide shelter to the homeless, and advocate for the most vulnerable.
Biden stated, “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.
“He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism. We will always cherish seeing him and Rosalynn together,” he added, referencing Carter’s wife of 77 years who died in November 2023.”
In tribute, Biden has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the White House, all public buildings, military posts, naval stations, and vessels for a period of 30 days. This directive extends to all US diplomatic missions, including embassies, consulates, and other facilities worldwide.
“I do further appoint January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States,” Biden said, urging Americans and people across the globe to commemorate Carter’s life and legacy.
