President Joe Biden reached out to congratulate President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory, the White House confirmed in a statement Wednesday.
Biden extended an invitation to Trump to meet at the White House and committed to ensuring a smooth transition of power. The president also emphasised the importance of uniting the nation, a message he plans to reiterate in a national address on Thursday.
The White House noted that Biden also spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris following her defeat in the election. Biden and Harris acknowledged the importance of a seamless transition, underscoring their commitment to facilitating cooperation and fostering stability as the incoming administration prepares to take office.
The message from Biden comes as part of a tradition in American democracy, where the outgoing administration offers its support to the newly elected leaders, with the aim of easing divisions and strengthening the country’s democratic process.
