US President Joe Biden convened his senior national security team on Monday amidst growing fears of a potential Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel. This comes after the assassination of Hamas’ political leader Ismail Haniyeh, for which Iran has vowed “severe” retaliation despite Israel not claiming responsibility.
Biden stated he had been briefed on preparations to support Israel if attacked, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed officials were working “around the clock” to prevent an escalation. The US and UK have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon, where Hezbollah could respond.
During Monday’s briefing, Biden was informed that the timing and nature of an Iranian attack remained uncertain. Blinken had earlier warned G7 counterparts that Iran and Hezbollah could strike within 24 to 48 hours. Biden affirmed that steps were being taken to respond to attacks on US forces “in a manner and place of our choosing,” referencing injuries sustained by US personnel in Iraq from a suspected rocket attack.
Blinken emphasised the need for all parties to avoid escalation, advocating for a ceasefire to promote enduring calm. Biden also spoke to King Abdullah II of Jordan about de-escalation efforts, including an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal.
The G7 issued a joint statement expressing concern over heightened tensions in the Middle East, warning against further escalation. Talks of a ceasefire in Gaza have faltered following the recent events, including the deaths of 12 children and teenagers in the Golan Heights and the killing of senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran, promising a “severe punishment.” Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah declared the conflict had entered a “new phase,” marking the closest point to escalation since April’s drone and missile attacks by Iran on Israel.
