Barcelona goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo knee surgery on Monday following a ruptured patella tendon sustained during Sunday’s 3-1 La Liga victory against Villarreal. The German international was stretchered off in the first half after his right knee buckled while catching the ball.
Barcelona has not yet provided a recovery timeline for the 32-year-old but promised further updates after the surgery. Ter Stegen, who has been a key figure for the club since his arrival from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, has made over 400 appearances for Barcelona.
Despite the injury setback, Barcelona’s win over Villarreal maintained their perfect La Liga record, moving them four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table.
