Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he and other opposition politicians will form a coalition to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Abubakar made this announcement on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, which was organised by concerned political leaders and stakeholders in response to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The event was attended by key political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, former APC National Working Committee (NWC) member Salihu Lukman, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal.
When asked about the possibility of a united opposition front against the APC, Abubakar affirmed, “Yes,” signalling a strategic effort to consolidate political forces ahead of the next general elections.
Abubakar strongly criticised President Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule in Rivers State, accusing him of political bias and favouritism. He argued that the president had violated his oath of office by failing to govern impartially.
“President Tinubu yielded to petty favouritism and betrayed the oath that he solemnly swore before God and man, which was to ‘do right to all manner of people, according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will,’” Abubakar stated.
He further condemned Tinubu’s nationwide address on March 18, 2025, calling it an open display of bias and a failure to uphold the dignity of his office.
Abubakar urged Nigerians to reject the state of emergency in Rivers, describing it as a direct attack on the state’s elected government. He called on citizens and political leaders to resist what he termed a “brazen affront” to democracy.
With tensions rising over the political situation in Rivers and growing discontent within opposition ranks, the push for a coalition signals a significant challenge to the APC’s hold on power as the 2027 elections approach.
