At least 87 people have died in a stampede during a religious event in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, local police reported on Tuesday.
The tragedy occurred at a satsang, a prayer meeting, in Mughal Garhi village, Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, according to officials.
This village is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of New Delhi. Police in Hathras district confirmed that at least 60 individuals have died.
An additional 27 people were pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in the nearby Etah district, per police and health officials.
“The death toll might increase. Victims are being taken to hospitals in both Hathras district and the neighboring Etah district,” said Manish Chikara, Hathras district police spokesperson.
Footage depicted crowds gathered outside an Etah hospital, alongside grieving relatives. Medical staff were seen transporting people on stretchers.
