At Least 60 Killed as Truck Carrying Wedding Guests Plunges into River In Ethiopia

A tragic truck accident in Ethiopia’s Sidama region LEFT at least 60 dead and survivors hospitalised.

At least 60 people lost their lives on Sunday when a truck carrying passengers to a wedding plunged into a river in Ethiopia’s southern Sidama region, according to regional authorities.

The tragic incident occurred in the Bona district, with survivors currently receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital, the regional communication bureau confirmed.

Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the victims were en route to a wedding when the accident happened.

Traffic accidents remain frequent in Ethiopia due to poor road safety standards and vehicle maintenance issues. The tragedy echoes a 2018 incident in the country’s north, where 38 people, primarily students, were killed when a bus fell into a ravine.

Further details on the cause of the crash and the condition of the survivors are awaited.
