Hours before the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics, French rail company SNCF reported that its high-speed network has been targeted by “malicious acts” intended to paralyse the system.
Several high-speed TGV lines were affected to the west, north, and east of Paris, leading to queues at Montparnasse station, which serves destinations to the west of the capital. Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete condemned the “criminal acts,” noting their impact on holiday plans.
SNCF warned that the situation could last “at least all weekend” while repairs are conducted, resulting in cancelled trains. Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra described the attacks as “downright appalling” and mentioned that the impact on the public and Olympic athletes was being assessed.
More than 300,000 spectators are expected in Paris on Friday for the opening ceremony, which will feature thousands of Olympic athletes sailing down the River Seine. SNCF stated that fires had been set to damage its facilities. A source close to the investigation described the attack as “sabotage.”
No one has admitted responsibility for targeting the high-speed network, but the apparent coordination of the acts has raised concerns. Some high-speed services have been diverted to other lines, causing delays to other services.
