Wednesday’s presidential inauguration in the United States signals a turning point in America’s relationship with itself and the world, after four years of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Mr Trump had promised in 2016, just before the presidential election, to get to Washington and “drain the swamp”.

However, four years down the line, and in the light of the astounding developments of the past three months since he lost out to Joe Biden, many analysts say he has indeed made much greater impact than merely draining a swamp, with much of what he did in that period being responsible for sending America on a negative spiral, leading to great loss of clout abroad, and the emergence of a never-seen-before explosion of right-wing terrorism at home.

Observers say that legacy may now be an unwanted leash on the new administration as it seeks to reposition the country to its former glory.
