Apple Inc. Conducts Layoffs In Digital Services Group, Impacting Apple Books

Apple is set to restructure efforts to refocus priorities, drive innovation, and address challenges in China, its third-largest market, amid sales decline.

Apple Inc. has eliminated approximately 100 jobs within its digital services group, according to report on Tuesday.

The layoffs primarily affected the team responsible for the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore, with additional cuts impacting engineering roles and other services teams, including the one managing Apple News.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the restructuring is part of Apple’s shift in focus towards artificial intelligence.

The company has been reorganising teams to align with this new priority, including suspending work on its next-generation Vision headset and discontinuing a project to design and develop its own smartwatch displays earlier this year.

As of September 30, 2023, Apple had around 161,000 full-time equivalent employees, according to its latest annual report.

However, the exact number of employees within the services division remains unclear.

The layoffs come as Apple faces challenges in China, its third-largest market, where sales declined 6.5% last quarter.

The company’s efforts to reorganise and refocus its priorities aim to address these headwinds and drive future growth.

“We are constantly evaluating our teams and priorities to ensure we are aligned with our goals,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement. “These changes will help us drive innovation and better serve our customers.”
