Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has announced that the company will revert to its pre-pandemic policy, requiring corporate employees to work from the office five days a week starting January 2, 2025.
In a memo shared with employees, Jassy explained that Amazon’s leadership has been reevaluating how to enhance collaboration, innovation, and customer satisfaction.
“When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant,” Jassy wrote.
The decision marks a significant shift from Amazon’s current policy, which requires corporate employees to work from the office three days a week.
The change follows a period of flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many companies adopted remote work arrangements.
Jassy emphasised the benefits of in-person interactions, said, “It’s easier for employees to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture and brainstorm when they’re together in person.”
He added, “If anything, the last 15 months we’ve been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits.”
The decision marks a departure from Amazon’s current policy, which requires corporate employees to work from the office three days a week.
Jassy explained that bringing employees back into the office full-time would help address issues with collaboration and innovation.
“It’s easier for employees to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture and brainstorm when they’re together in person,”
Jassy wrote. “If anything, the last 15 months we’ve been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits.”
This change follows a period of flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many companies adopted remote work arrangements.
In 2021, Amazon introduced a flexible work policy, allowing leaders to determine team arrangements.
However, in February 2023, the company mandated three-day office attendance, sparking protests from some employees.
At the time, Jassy said employees unhappy with the change should “disagree and commit” or consider leaving, adding, “It’s probably not going to work out” for those who refused.
The new policy would takes effect on January 2, 2025, and will impact Amazon’s corporate employees worldwide.
