Algeria’s Ruling National Liberation Front Wins Most Parliamentary Seats

Algeria’s ruling party, the National Liberation Front (FLN), has won most seats in last Saturday’s parliamentary election, which saw a low turnout of 23%.

The FLN grabbed 105 out of 407 available seats, followed by an historic win for independent candidates who took 78 seats.

The National Democratic Rally (RND), the party that was in power under former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, won 57 seats, while the largest Islamic party the Movement for the Society of Peace (MSP) won 64.

A total of 34 women, about 8.35% of the MPs, were elected.

Only 5.6 million voters cast their ballots out of the 24.6 million registered, according to the final results announced by the electoral commission.

The election was boycotted by the popular protest movement known as Hirak, along with other political parties.

The movement had described the vote as pointless under the current regime.

The protesters have since 2019 been calling for a radical change of the country’s political system and the removal of all the officials associated with the former president.
