The scheduled swim familiarisation for Monday’s mixed team triathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics was canceled for the second consecutive day due to substandard water quality in the River Seine. Olympic organisers announced the decision on Sunday, citing that heavy rain late last week had caused the water quality to fall below the required standard.
Despite expectations for improved conditions by Sunday morning, the water quality did not meet the necessary criteria for the practice swim to proceed at 07:00 BST. As a result, the men’s triathlon, initially set for earlier in the week, was also postponed to Wednesday.
The recent heavy rainfall has elevated levels of E. coli and other bacteria in the Seine. However, the forecasted hot weather, with temperatures expected to reach 25°C later on Sunday, is anticipated to help reduce the bacteria count.
