The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Transafam Power to implement a 50MW embedded power generation project for Abuja’s Idu commercial hub. This significant development was formalised by AEDC’s MD/CEO, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, and Transafam Power Limited’s MD/CEO, Engr. Vincent Ozoude, during the Summit on Accelerated Scale-Up of Renewable and Distributed Energy Resources in Nigeria, hosted by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The project is set to fulfill 82% of NERC’s requirements for embedded power generation, ensuring a reliable and consistent power supply for the Idu Cluster. This initiative is a key component of AEDC’s transformation agenda, aimed at generating its own electricity and reducing dependency on the national grid. By diversifying its energy sources, AEDC is dedicated to providing stable and dependable electricity for all its stakeholders.
The partnership also enables Transafam, a leading power generating company and subsidiary of Nigeria’s largest listed conglomerate, Transcorp Group, to optimize its generating capacity. By offering both on-grid and embedded generation, Transafam can serve a wider cluster and enhance its service delivery.
This collaboration represents a significant stride towards improving Nigeria’s electricity sector. It aims to deliver reliable and sustainable power, enhancing the overall power landscape and fostering economic growth and prosperity. This initiative exemplifies Africapitalism, demonstrating the potential for African businesses to drive economic transformation and development.
