Adele appeared as a host on US comedy show Saturday Night Live, joking about her weight loss and explaining to fans why her next album is unfinished.
The singer returned to the sketch show for the first time since 2015, when she appeared as a musical guest.
There had been speculation that her high-profile presenting role could mean she’s on the verge of releasing new music, but the star wrote on Instagram last week that she wanted the appearance to be a “stand alone moment”.
On the show, she said she was only hosting because “my album is not finished and I’m also too scared to do both.”
“I would rather just put on some wigs – and this is all mine by the way – have a glass of wine or six and just see what happens.”
Her last album, the award-winning and critically acclaimed ’25,’ was released five years ago.
She has remained out of the public eye since 2016, resurfacing earlier this year with a stunning transformation that made headlines.
Referring to her weight loss on the comedy show, she said: “I know I look really, really different since you last saw me but actually, because of all the COVID restrictions and the travel bans, I had to travel light and only bring half of me – and this is the half I chose.”
The star dedicated Saturday’s show to front-line workers in the Covid-19 pandemic, some of whom had been invited to the socially-distanced audience in New York.
