Access Bank PLC has been named the THISDAY Global Bank of the Year 2024, cementing its position as a key player in the international banking landscape.
The bank clinched the top honour at the THISDAY Awards 2025, held at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, surpassing African Export-Import (AFREXIM) Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA).
At the same event, Chairman of Access Holdings, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, received the THISDAY Titan of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the financial sector.
The awards ceremony, themed “When the Going Gets Tough… The Tough Get Rewarded”, marked the 30th anniversary of THISDAY Newspapers and the 12th anniversary of Arise News Channel.
THISDAY Newspapers praised Access Bank for its strategic leadership, rapid expansion, and commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The bank was also recognised for its leadership in digital banking, having won the 2024 Digital Jurist Award for Best Digital Bank.
Beyond digital innovation, Access Bank has demonstrated strong commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, earning the 2024 Euromoney Award for Best Bank for ESG in Nigeria and Ghana.
With an expanding presence across the United Kingdom, Ghana, United Arab Emirates, China, and several African nations, the bank continues to solidify its global influence.
Access Bank’s technological innovations—Facepay, Access Closa, the AccessMore mobile app, and Africa Fintech Foundry—further highlight its drive for excellence in banking technology.
Speaking at the event, Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank, Roosevelt Ogbonna, dedicated the award to the bank’s stakeholders.
“This award represents 30 years of hard work of doing things differently, and of building on the legacy of industry giants like Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and Herbert Wigwe.
“We are deeply grateful to our board, management, customers, and stakeholders, who have continuously supported us. This award is for you, and we accept it in your honour.”
Honoured alongside 11 other industry leaders, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede reminisced about his early days in banking and his connection with THISDAY founder, Prince Nduka Obaigbena.
“In 1991, Prince Obaigbena and I first met as customer and banker. He told me that anyone fortunate enough to manage his account would one day become a managing director of a bank, and I am thankful that God fulfilled that vision. It is an incredible honour to stand with such esteemed colleagues.”
The star-studded event brought together dignitaries from the private and public sectors, celebrating excellence across industries.
