Abuja Court Grants Bail to APGA Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Over Assault on Bolt Driver

Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh, who is accused of assaulting a Bolt driver, has been granted N500,000 bail pending further court proceedings.

A Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja has granted a N500,000 bail to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives and member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), following charges of assault against a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

Ikwechegh’s alleged actions, which included slapping and verbally abusing Abuwatseya, were caught on video, sparking significant public outrage.

The incident occurred on October 27 in Abuja’s Maitama district after Ikwechegh reportedly reacted angrily when Abuwatseya requested he approach the vehicle to retrieve a package.

At his arraignment on Wednesday, Ikwechegh faced a three-count charge of assault and threat to life, brought by the Inspector-General of Police’s office. Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty, and his counsel applied for bail.

Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted bail with conditions requiring two sureties, each providing a utility bill as proof of residence within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case has been scheduled for a hearing on November 8, 2024.
