Thai authorities detained 70 suspected illegal immigrants, including 30 children, believed to be Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, on a beach in southern Thailand, officials announced on Saturday. This marks the latest instance of mass migration in Southeast Asia as the stateless Rohingya continue fleeing persecution.
“From initial questioning, they said they are Muslims from Myanmar heading to Malaysia or Indonesia,” said Somkane Phothisri, commander of Phang Nga provincial police. The group, which included women in hijabs, was discovered on a southern island, likely attempting to seek refuge in Muslim-majority nations.
The governor of Phang Nga province, Supoj Rodrung na Nongkhai, confirmed the arrest but stated, “We cannot determine if they are Rohingya or Myanmar who have illegally entered the country yet.” Investigations are ongoing, and the children will be placed under the care of the Department of Social Development and Welfare.
The discovery highlights the continued plight of the Rohingya, who are denied citizenship and face systemic abuse in Myanmar. Many embark on perilous sea journeys to neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia, especially during calmer seas from October to April.
This arrest adds to growing concerns over the region’s capacity to address the humanitarian needs of Rohingya migrants amid intensifying migration waves.
