The local prosecutor claimed late Sunday that a town in northern Burkina Faso witnessed some 60 civilians massacred by persons in military uniforms. He announced an inquiry into the most recent tragedy in the insurgency-affected nation.
The landlocked, one of the most unstable, and poorest nations in the world is located in the Sahel region of West Africa.
Attacks in Burkina Faso, which is confronting an insurgency that has spread from neighboring Mali, are increasingly being attributed to alleged Islamists.
According to Ouahigouya High Court prosecutor Lamine Kabore, who cited the gendarmerie, “about 60 people were killed by people wearing the uniforms of our national armed forces” on Thursday in the hamlet of Karma, in northern Yatenga region.
Around 40 people were killed and more than 30 were injured in an attack on the Burkinabe army and volunteer forces that happened earlier last week in the same area, close to Ouahigouya.
Since jihadist extremists began operating in the region in 2015, many have died.
He said that the offenders had “taken various goods” and that the injured had been evacuated and were now being treated at our medical facilities.
Residents contacted by AFP reported that survivors claimed that around 100 individuals on motorcycles and pickup vehicles invaded the area.
The guys, who were disguised in military attire, allegedly slaughtered dozens of men and young people.
A death toll of “around 80 dead” was reported by survivors.
