Kidney Disease on the Rise in Nigeria

According to urologist and kidney transplant surgeon, Dr. Martin Igbokwe, who was on The Arise Interview with Charles Aniagolu, kidney disease is on the rise in Nigeria.

Diabetes and high blood pressure linked to obesity appear to account for a significant percentage of the increase, Igbokwe said.

He revealed that the prevalence of chronic kidney disease among Nigerians has risen in the last decade, with the illness accounting for more than ten percent of all hospital admissions.

In addition, more Nigerians now have high blood pressure, which is often uncontrolled – and high blood pressure can also damage the kidneys.

Dr. Igbokwe spoke on the work that’s being done in Nigeria to try to offer everything from dialysis to renal replacement therapy for patients with kidney injury or failure.
