17 Days to Go, INEC Assures Nigerians That General Elections Will Hold as Scheduled Despite Naira, Petrol Scarcity

Despite the twin challenges of petrol and cash scarcity, 17 days to the opening of polls in Nigeria, the Chairman of the  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has assured Nigerians that the 2023 general elections will hold as scheduled.

The INEC Boss disclosed this  to ARISE State House Correspondents after briefing the Federal Executive Council.

Mahmood says the briefing of the council was keeping with tradition.

He thereafter outlined measures the commission has taken to address the challenges that may affect the conduct of the elections.

On Tuesday Yakubu met the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno . He also paid a courtesy visit to the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, where he expressed concerns that the current cash crunch may affect the flow of logistics ahead of the elections if not managed.

The INEC boss received the assurances of the NSA on adequate security and that of the CBN Governor on the availability of cash to aide election logistics.

The briefing is coming two days before an emergency meeting of the council of state to be convened on Friday.

Before Yakubu briefed council members,

a moment of silence was observed in honour of Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (retd), former minister of special duties under General Yakubu Gowon’s regime . He died February 1, at the age of 80.
