14th Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi Briefs Tinubu After Meeting with Niger Junta

This is after the junta aborted a meeting with representatives of the AU, ECOWAS and a top US diplomat.

Ahead of Thursday’s ECOWAS extraordinary meeting, Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, has briefed ECOWAS chairman, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, on his intervention efforts in resolving the Niger crisis.

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had earlier on Wednesday met with the coup leaders that seized power in Niger Republic.

This is after the junta aborted a meeting with representatives of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and a top US diplomat.

A delegation raised by ECOWAS could not broker peace with the military rulers as they declined a meeting.

But on Wednesday, photos of Sanusi, whose Tijjaniya sect has a large following in Niger, went into circulation.

Following this, Sanusi visited Nigeria’s presidential villa on Wednesday after his interactions with the coup leaders in Niger. He said he was warmly welcomed there.

He emphasized his commitment to ongoing mediation for the restoration of peace in the country, and explained that his intervention is a personal endeavor, even though Nigerian government officials were aware of his mission.
